Every perfume unfolds over time, like music. Perfumers describe it in three layers, called notes.
Top notes: the first impression
The lightest ingredients, noticed in the first minutes: citrus, fruits, light spices. In Dubai Sheikh, the top is grapefruit and a marine accord.
Heart notes: the character
The heart appears after 15 to 30 minutes and lasts several hours, usually flowers or spices. In Sheikh Zayed, the heart is centifolia rose, patchouli and geranium.
Base notes: the memory
The heaviest ingredients, lasting the longest: woods, amber, musk, vanilla, oud. In Gemini, the base is amber, white musk, sandalwood and vanilla.
Why it matters
Many people buy a perfume for its top notes and are surprised later. Always look at the base, and test on skin for at least 20 minutes. See how to choose a perfume online.
