Oud is the heart of Arabian perfumery. You can wear it as a concentrated oil (dehn al oud) or as part of a spray perfume. Both are beautiful, but they behave differently on the skin. Here is what you need to know.
Quick answer
Oud oil is a concentrated, alcohol-free perfume oil applied in small dabs; it sits close to the skin and lasts a long time. Oud perfume (eau de parfum) is diluted in alcohol and sprayed; it projects further and is easier to apply. Many people in the Gulf wear both: oil first, perfume on top.
Side-by-side comparison
| Oud oil (dehn al oud) | Oud perfume (EDP) | |
|---|---|---|
| Base | Oil, no alcohol | Alcohol with perfume concentrate |
| How to apply | A small dab or roll-on | Spray |
| Projection | Close to the skin | Spreads around you |
| Longevity | Long on skin and fabric | Good, depends on the fragrance |
| Best for | Layering, evenings, personal scent | Daily wear, a noticeable trail |
How to wear oud oil
- Use very little: a small dab on each wrist and at the neck is enough.
- Apply to clean, dry skin. Oils can mark light fabrics, so apply before dressing.
- Warm the oil between your fingers before applying to help it open.
Our oud oil collection includes Golden Oud Oil, Sheikh Zayed Oud Oil, Gemini Oud Oil, White Musk Oud Oil and Barari Al Khaleej Oud Oil.
How to wear oud perfume
Spray two to four times on pulse points and clothing. For a strong oud character, choose a perfume with oud in the base, such as Sheikh Zayed (saffron and rose over amber, guaiac wood and oud) or Oud Touch and Oud Leather.
Layering oil and perfume
- Apply oud oil to the wrists and neck.
- Wait about a minute.
- Spray your perfume over the same spots.
The oil gives the perfume a base to hold on to, so it lasts longer and gains depth. Try pairing an oil and a perfume with the same name, such as Sheikh Zayed oil with Sheikh Zayed perfume, or a white musk oil under a floral perfume like Gemini. Frequently asked questions
Oud oil is more concentrated and usually lasts longer, but it stays closer to the skin. A spray perfume projects further, so people around you notice it more.
Yes. Oud is worn by men and women across the Gulf. Softer blends with rose, musk or vanilla are popular with women.
Oils can mark light or delicate fabrics. Apply oud oil to the skin and let it absorb before dressing.
Because you only need a small dab each time, a bottle of oud oil typically lasts much longer than a spray perfume of the same price.
